Nice Guy (tm) opens fire in a Gym and kills several women.
Via [info]cereta Blog Details Shooter’s Frustration

“I actually look good,” Mr. Sodini wrote in an entry dated Dec. 29, 2008. “I dress good, am clean-shaven, bathe, touch of cologne — yet 30 million women rejected me —

And yet the next paragraph is so revealing about why 30 million rejected this prince amongst the frogs.

“A man needs a woman for confidence. He gets a boost on the job, career, with other men, and everywhere else when he knows inside he has someone to spend the night with and who is also a friend.”

    1) A man needs a woman for confidence.

It's all about meeeeee! meeeeee! meeeeee!

    2) He gets a boost on the job, career, with other men, and everywhere else

It's all about meeeeeee and the shiny toy I wwaaaaannnnt! All the other boys have this really cool and useful gadget that gives social status. I deserve this thing, too.

    3) when he knows inside he has someone to spend the night with

    Gimmie teh hawt sexx0rs!

    4) and who is also a friend.

And, by the way, as an afterthought, last on my list of why it's good to have a woman in your life and why I want one, her friendship's nice to have, too.

    ------

Seriously, I've seldom seen a clearer example of "The Nice Guy" (tm) in action. True, he's got a slightly nicer spin on it than the guy who compared a naked lady to wad of $100 bills because "they are both desireable objects", but at the heart of it? He's such a Nice Guy, it's no wonder he couldn't get laid or get a date.

No Laydeez (and Germs) I did not forget glorious Manfesh Wednesday.

We'll start with this month's Vintage Manflesh --- Montgomery Clift, who was as screwed up as he was beautiful.

Naomi Sims has left the building
Once upon a time, you didn't see Black Women on magazine covers, or modeling for high end fashion magazines. Naomi Sims changed that.

She left modeling the year I was born, and yet, if you click here, you'll see several iconic photos of her.

After leaving modeling she wrote several books, started her own business, and was an advocate for female empowerment and education.

A pity it is she died so young. Women like her should live to be (feisty) 100somethings.

Corazon Aquino has left the building.

She, along with Margaret Thatcher, was a huge role model for me during my Jr High years in terms of giving me the idea that Women Could Lead A Nation.

How to keep cool when it's freaking hot out and you have no AC
    1) The iced drink is your friend.
    2) Provided it's not too humid, you can use a humidifyer as a teeny tiny swamp cooler.
    3) You can rig a swamp cooler with damp sheets/towels, a fan, and an open doorway or window.
    4) The iced drink is your friend.
    5) The cool bath is your friend.
    6) If you have a back yard, frolic in the sprinklers.
    7) Your local library is quiet and air conditioned.
    8) 100% cotton is your friend. Cotton-Poly blends are not. (Seriously, this makes a HUGE difference.)
    9) Keep blinds and curtains drawn as much as possible during the day.
    10) The iced drink is your friend.
    11) Friends with working ACs are friends.

    International Blog Against Racism Week
    Yeah, it's halfway over.

And I'm seeing a lot less posts amongst my f'list on the topic this year, which probably has something to do with the huge karking mess that was Race Fail ... but if you think about it, Race Fail ended up being a blog against racism season, so maybe people have said what they want to say on the topic and are chewing and digesting.

I've bookmarked a few things that I'd like to share with youse, though.

The Chinese Sail, by Brian Platt. This essay, ostensibly about the advantages of the traditional Chinese ribbed sail, is also an essay about how its advantages have been overlooked by Western sailors because of prejudice.

In describing the virtues of the traditional Chinese rig compared to the Western "Bermuda" rig, Platt observes:
Finally, it is worth pointing out that there is no welded or wrought or cast or machined metal work in the Chinese rig - or none that cannot be replaced with a rope or wire - so there is no repair that cannot be executed at sea. Only simple tools need be carried, and an ample supply of bamboo and baling-wire in addition to the cordage and sail cloth and twine that are carried as normal spares.

    His conclusion opens:

It is difficult to make any sense out of the contempt with which the Chinese sailing boat is generally regarded in the West. This contempt stems from ignorance, but the ignorance itself, I think, has its roots in three main causes. The first is the almost unbelievable indifference displayed by most Europeans and Americans in the Far East to the races that live around them. Amazing the prevalence of misconceptions and the lack of any attempt or desire to find out the truth, the failure even to learn the language. If those living near China cannot be bothered even to explore Chinese cooking (the average white man in Hong Kong is acquainted with perhaps a dozen dishes out of the hundreds that exist!) why should they be bothered to learn about Chinese sailing boats?
    (emphasis mine)

Yes, the relationship between ignorance and racism ....

A Class Divided -- "This is one of the most requested programs in FRONTLINE's history. It is about an Iowa schoolteacher who, the day after Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered in 1968, gave her third-grade students a first-hand experience in the meaning of discrimination. This is the story of what she taught the children, and the impact that lesson had on their lives."

And while that was all well and good and groundbreaking for 1968 the question is, why haven't we progressed more?

I present this (fascinating to me) post and thread titled Old Fashioned Racism, which on the one hand illustrates that enough progress has been made since the 1960s, that for many people "old fashioned racism" is so rare that it's like (in the words of an acquaintance) "discovering that werewolves exist", but on the other shows why it's still entrenched. (I think the OP's explanation of why she's not going to report this to management may shed some light on the issue.)

    I hate humdity
I can tolerate heat up to temperatures that would make most people wimper.

    But I cannot tolerate humidity.

    Right now it's 96f with 53% humidity.

I just took a quarter mile round trip mozy to the bookstore to buy gum and 2/3 way back I was shaking and thought I might vomit.

Interesting Video on the science of taste
Granted, it's why some people don't like broccoli, but it probably pretty much explains why I don't like some wines and most beers. And there's probably a gene to explain why I think fish is nasty.

Jimmy Carter Loses his Religion in the name of Equality
via [info]alysswolf, Losing My Religion for Equality.

The carefully selected verses found in the Holy Scriptures to justify the superiority of men owe more to time and place - and the determination of male leaders to hold onto their influence - than eternal truths. Similar biblical excerpts could be found to support the approval of slavery and the timid acquiescence to oppressive rulers.

I am also familiar with vivid descriptions in the same Scriptures in which women are revered as pre-eminent leaders. During the years of the early Christian church women served as deacons, priests, bishops, apostles, teachers and prophets. It wasn't until the fourth century that dominant Christian leaders, all men, twisted and distorted Holy Scriptures to perpetuate their ascendant positions within the religious hierarchy.

The truth is that male religious leaders have had - and still have - an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter.

    Selfish ends indeed.

The Opression Olympics -- the way to win is NOT TO PLAY.
There is no "win" in the Opression Olympics. There is only FAIL.

Gay is Not The New Black.

The 40th anniversary of Stonewall dominated Gay Pride celebrations around the country, and while that is certainly a significant moment that should be recognized, 40 years is nothing compared with the 400 blood-soaked years black people have been through in this country.

I totally agree that "gay is not the new black". It's not. Period. Apples and Oranges are both edible fruits that grow on trees, but they aren't interchangeable.

    But.

Consididering that just a skoosh of research will show the ugly blood-soaked punishments that the Puritans and other Colonial Authorities meted out for "crimes against nature?" ... not to mention the whole well documented 1000+ or so years of widespread harsh repression and punishment meted out by European Authorities* against homosexuals (or people suspected of being homosexuals) please sit down because your ass is showing, and not the good way. Thank you.

    * I don't know enough about what the various pre-slave trade, pre-colonial, and/or non-Muslim African Authories and cultures thought about homosexuality to make any kind of informed statement on the matter.

Artesia Besieged "As I Lay Dying"
OMG, yes, after a 3 year hiatus-cliffhanger, the issue is finally out. I'd given up hope. I'm really hoping that the next issue comes out in Sept, and not, y'know, 3 years from now.

    Thoughts?

Strong issue. I loved the idea of Artesia's expanded consciousness as she drifts in and out of reality as her ghosts and familiars counsel her. "This isn't how you die." But all the iterations, the possiblities of how she could die? Some of those are downright chilling. ("King Ceryx eats you alive" "You are raped to death by a company of your own men" and ... the last possiblity is shown, not said, and it's brilliant, given the reveal in the pages that close the issue.)

The page with Baron Wallis's confession broke my heart -- so much packed into such a brief space.

The last panel make me laugh out loud for two reasons.

    1) It's a hella funny line.
    2) It's just like religious zealots to hold a witchhunt at a time like this. We don't need a winning general with a realistic battle plan in this hour of need -- stop getting facts in the way of our short-sighted holier-than-thou-ism! Oh, and we don't need no stinkin' allies, neither, despite the fact that we are getting our asses kicked. See above about getting facts and reality in the way of the true faith.
    3) Given the reveals in the 2nd Series from the Duke's wife (about how she and her husband die), and given the way that the (powerful) Liefrings (Baron Wallis's Clan) seem to feel about Artesia, I think there's going to be an even bigger split amongst the Sun Court and the Seated Kings than there is now, perhaps even a split between the bulk of the nobility and the Seated Kings.

How to crack your Barrista up
Yeah, I slept well last night but I'm still in the sleep hole and I need some serious caffination to get going today.

So, I walked into The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and said, "I want one of those Big McLarge Huge iced coffees, thank you."

(I'm not drinking it all at once, though. I ran around all "I am Cornholio" for 3 hours then crashed hard right before lunch. Lesson learned.)

Computer Repair -- Mothers, buy daughters Legos, Tinker Toys, and Erector Sets
Because there has been a spate of dying computers amongst my f'list and because I'm about to purchase an inverter board for my old PowerBook Pismo which will require stripping it down to the frame ....

Back in, oh, 1996 when I was a piss poor grad student and Ralph was a piss poor business owner, my desk top computer started making funny noses right by the fan in the top back of the case. I determined it was a dying power supply. I had about $200 in my checking account. Not enough to buy a new 'puter, and getting that part swapped in and out at a shop would be about $100 for parts and labor.

By doing some research and sliding the case off, and taking notes, I went to my local independent computer store and paid $40 for a power supply.

And then I went home and cried because I had to get this computer fixed because I had a term paper due next week, and I was going to have to strip my computer down to the motherboard and frame to fix this problem. And then I dried my tears, took off my shoes and socks (to ground myself), cut 2 sheets of paper into strips, got several 3x5 cards, the scotch tape, and a sharpie handy, set out the big and little cross head screwdrivers, prayed, unplugged, and slid the case off.

I took copious notes. Every screw, cable, and part that came off got a strip of paper taped to itr that described where it had been and what it had plugged into. I put an X on the top side of all the ribbon cables. I wrote down every step that I did on the 3x5 cards.

And as I got to that last step where I unplugged the "umbilical cord" from the board and plugged the new one in? I thanked god that my parents encouraged me to play with Legos, Tinker Toys and Erector sets, because that's what I was doing here, only it was a really expensive Lego-Tinker Toy-Erector Set amalgamation. But it all fit. There was a system. There was logic.

And step by step by step, with my notes and labels, I put it all back together again and it worked perfectly, and, I got an A on the paper.

(And I learned to get a set of needlenose pliers so that I could grip the plastic plugs on the back of ribbon cables and power plugs nice and tight and not bruise and bang my fingers in the process.)

It's one of the scariest things I ever did.

It's also one of the accomplishments I'm most proud of in my life.

It''s saved me $$$ when it comes to computer and gizmo repair.

And now for the throbby vein in the forhead portion of our day
[info]tammy212 says pretty much everything I want to say about the bile-rich vomit inducing thread on the right-wing blog Free Republic and the people who hold those sorts of beliefs here.

it is not the educated, gracious, cosmopolitan Obama family who draws the world's derision and horror. It is the naked, slime-dripping, bottom-feeding mouthings of you, who call yourselves "real Americans." That's just what the world is afraid of.

    And not without reason.

(And if you go to the Vancouver Sun page linked from her LJ, the Sun links screencaps of the actual thread which was twice approved by the moderators, so that the perps can't slither away into the sewers unchecked.

    Twice. Approved.

So makes me want to go Typhoid Mary on their asses.)
